DEFINITION OF WELLNESS What is the definition of wellness? More than ever before, we hear this word in the news, on billboards, in conversation and even at work. Interestingly, there is no universally accepted definition of wellness. “Wellness is a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of well-being.” - Charles B. Corbin of Arizona State University Wellness means when you achieve balance, congruency in those areas, you naturally become optimally alive and vibrant. Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.
Wellness is a Journey, not a destination. It is a gift you can give yourself. It has been regarded that the most vital component in leading a good quality life is the individual’s lifestyle that influences his wellbeing; an individual should know how to maintain his wellbeing by way of his proper way of life. Our choices enormously affect our wellness, as our choices are element of our lifestyle. The most important aspect with our choices is putting every thing to be well balanced and to identify between dos and don’ts. These choices that affect our health and fitness includes: the food items we consume, workouts, dietary supplements and fun pursuits. Buddha Says, “Whatever we are today is nothing but the result of our own choices we have made in our past”. Every lifestyle & choices affects our health in some way. It is important to make or adopt good lifestyle & choices at a young age so that you don’t suffer when you are older. Optimum natural health and fitness is NOT just surviving. It is about wellness. It is about living a happier, healthier, more harmonious existence. According to a research study which is related to wellness, “The influence of taking care of themselves and making their lifestyle as per their choices are healthier, happier, more productive on less cost Americans are on top than others.” As per an article from the journal of the American Medical Association (AMA) had done a research on wellness approach and they found that the people were so much educated regarding wellness approach had reduced 35% doctor visits for minor illness & 17% in total. Wellness is a proactive approach to living an optimal lifestyle. When we talk about past time the people were reactive. If we think that, why they had became reactive? One of the reason behind this is that they were reactive rather than proactive & preventative approach. Here reactive means after suffered from any disease then they think for their prevention. Many people are passive with regard to their health and well-being. When pain, illness or emotional upset gets bad enough, they go to doctor, see a therapist, or find some other practitioner who might be able to fix them. In the modern era, the scenario has completely changed and people have become proactive & preventative approach that leads to ascertain harmony at every level of life. “If you win, you need not have to explain……… If you lose, you should not be there to explain!” ------- Adolf hitler Scope of Wellness Industry in India Press: Wellness market to grow in INDIA at 30-35 pc in 5 yrs. Agencies, Posted: Apr 15, 2009 at 1618 hrs IST New Delhi Notwithstanding the current economic slowdown, the Rs 11,000-crore Indian wellness services market is expected to grow at about 30-35 per cent for the next five years on the back of rising consumerism, globalization and changing lifestyles, according to a study. According to a FICCI-Ernst and Young study titled 'Wellness-Exploring the Untapped Potential', the wellness services market, presently estimated at Rs 11,000 crore, would sustain an annual growth rate of about 30-35 per cent for the next five years. The report classified wellness industry into seven core segments of allopathy, alternative therapies, beauty, counselling, fitness/slimming, nutrition and rejuvenation. While rejuvenation services such as spas, alternative therapies, Ayurveda treatments and beauty services are expected to grow by as much as 30 per cent, fitness comprising gyms and slimming centres are expected to grow by more than 25 per cent, the study said. "Given the favorable demand and supply dynamics, wellness presents strong business potential," Ernst and Young Partner (Advisory Services) Farokh Balsara said. The FICCI-E&Y report said increasing level of activity created by the entry of national and international players in the organized market, expansion by existing companies to new product categories and regions, strategic alliances across the value chain and interest by private equity investors led to the growth in the wellness sector. It said services like Ayurveda treatment; alternative treatment centres and salons require lower investment and have lower paybacks of up to three years. Products such as health foods and drinks, dietary supplements and alternative medicines require greater investments, normally exceeding Rs 25 crore or more with paybacks ranging from 3-6 years. Region wise, South is much ahead in terms of indicative concentration for the organized wellness-based centers per household with 34.4 centers per lakh households as compared to 13.6 for the North, 12 for West and 10.1 in the East.
